Stream: Sufjan Stevens – “Alphabet St.” (Prince Cover)

November 10, 2012 2 comments

I am, undoubtedly, a Sufjan Stevens megafan (I was the second black kid at his concert.) And, one thing I’ve learned so far is that Sufjan takes Christmas VERY seriously. Back in ’06, Stevens gave us, the self-explanatory, Songs for Christmas (through Asthmatic Kitty), which included five EP’s — ranging from seven to eleven tracks each — culminating in one box set recorded from 2001 through its release.

But, that was just the beginning. Early last month, Stevens announced that he’d be releasing Silver & Gold: Songs for Christmas vol. 6-10 this month (Tuesday to be exact) and the latest early track to drop in the series is from vol. 8, titled Christmas Infinity Voyage, (which was awarded the gloriously Gundam-inspired artwork above.) Oh yeah, AND IT’S A PRINCE COVER! The original hails from Purple One’s 1988 album Lovesexy, (it’s the one where he poses nude while sitting on an O’Keeffe-esque floral arrangement [juxtaposed by a peculiarly positioned stamen aimed directly at his chest… Yup]). Hear the track below.

In case you were iffy about spending money on a Christmas box set in the middle of November, allow me to persuade with five rock solid reasons:

If you’re as curious as I am, vol. 8 isn’t the only great cover made for Silver & Gold:

There’s “Gloria”

“I Am Santa’s Helper”

“Let It Snow”

and “Christmas Unicorn”

The collaborators include “a running line-up of friends and musical peers, including Aaron and Bryce Dessner (The National), Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire), Cat Martino (Sufjan’s right-hand woman on all things Age of Adz), Sebastian Krueger (Inlets), Gabriel Kahane, Vesper Stamper, and members of Danielson (Daniel, Elin, Lilly, and Ida).

The physical release will be packaged with various goodies, including: “Christmas stickers, temporary tattoos, lyric sheets and chord charts, a paper ornament, an apocalyptic pull-out poster, photos, illustrations, and extensive liner notes.”

The vinyl (which hasn’t been confirmed for a store date) will include a coloring book! One of the pages being this awesomely outrageous picture:

(apparently, not only is Santa Claus Jewish, but also caught a body at some point)

And finally…
