When the first few seconds of Coldplay’s newest single off of their upcoming album,“Ghost Stories”, entered my consciousness, my first thought was the XX, but then Chris Martin’s ever soothing vocals re-affirmed its creator. The blue tones of the piano and guitar reminisce over the sound that Coldplay built their name upon, while the Disclosure-esque drums and layered female vocal samples add an element that takes Coldplay to musical realms it had not yet explored. Martin’s melodies still warmly captivate Coldplay’s signature nostalgic feel, but the modern production work reminds of the transformation that the Killers took with their release of “Shot at the Night” produced by M83’s Anthony Gonzalez.
In “Magic”, a veteran band emerges ready to venture unexplored waters, and they are perhaps ready to do so with increased production-centric experimentation. It is definitely an exciting time to be a fan of the British band as they gear up to deliver their sixth studio album through Parlophone/Atlantic Records on May 19.
