Smothered & Covered: Frank Ocean – “We All Try”

The bloggers here at MJF love to bring our readers new features (just look at “The Snack Bar” and “Late Night Snack“). To keep up with this precedent, the time has come to add some new content. So allow me to introduce our newest creation, “Smothered & Covered.” This feature will focus on showcasing those artists (both known and unknown) that have delivered outstanding renditions of some of music’s hottest tracks.

First up is an artist by the name of Sid Sriram (@sidsriram) with a cover of Frank Ocean’s ‘We All Try’ off nostalgia, ULTRA. A student at Berklee College of Music, Sid began singing at the age of three. Although he initially began with South Indian classical music, he got into contemporary R&B music during junior high.

Check out his cover below:

What makes this cover work is Sid’s decidedly different take on the track. Whereas Frank tends to exercise restraint in his emoting, Sid makes the number more soulful adding riffs and the piano accompaniment. There is also pureness in the tone of his voice that makes the lyrics resonate with the viewer. Sid is a skilled tenor, and this number is perfect at showing his range.

If you would like to hear more music from Sid, check him out on his YouTube page or download his EP. Alternatively, if you would like to submit a cover for consideration, hit me up on email ([email protected]) or Twitter.
