Smothered & Covered: Britney Spears – “Toxic”

You can thank my random viewing of So You Think You Can Dance for today’s Smothered & Covered

This take on one of Britney Spears’s biggest hits was created by the production team, District 78. Compromised of three members, the duo first began producing in 2005. Their work has been featured on America’s Next Best Dance Crew and the movie Step Up: 3D, in addition to the previously mentioned SYTYCD. The cover also features the vocals of former The Voice contestant Cheesa.

Check it out below:

There are a few notable aspects of this cover, the first being the production. District 78 completely flips the beat of the original, and transforms the once bubbly pop jam into a daunting midtempo ballad. Although we have been known to have our problems with dubstep, in this instance it works. They create a backdrop that is wholly convoluted, but not distracting. Put simply, it complements the “toxicity” of the lyrics. There is also the performance of the vocalist. Her monotonous delivery, ironically, creates an atmosphere that is more engaging. Despite sounding detached, she is never not in control. Her vocals steer the fluidity of the song, and drive home just how eerie this cover is.

If you would like to hear more from District 78, you can buy their cover on iTunes or check out their website.
